The home study process begins with gathering information and documentation.  The format used follows the general regulations and Laws of The State of Utah.  The home study itself is a written report of the findings of the home study professional who will meet with the applicants both individually and together with at least one meeting that will occur in the applicant's home. Anyone else living in the home will also will be interviewed.

Process and what's involved in your home study

  • Contact Utah Home Study to schedule a home study appointment
  • To start with, the following information must be gathered and documentation provided as applicable
  • Personal and family background-including upbringing, siblings, key events, and what was learned from them
  • Significant people in the lives of the applicants
  • Marriage and family relationships
  • Motivation to adopt (see article)
  • Expectations for the child
  • Feelings about infertility (if this is an issue) (see article)
  • Parenting and integration of the child into the family (see article)
  • Family environment
  • Physical and health history and recent physical exams of the applicants
  • Education and employment 
  • Finances including insurance coverage and child care plans if needed
  • Religious affiliation 
  • Criminal Background investigation for each applicant 
  • Child abuse and neglect investigation for each applicant (form)
  • References
  • Summary and social worker's recommendation.
  • Following the visits your Home Study report will be completed, notarized and two copies will be sent to you
